Session 1 (May 11th, 8am PST): Defining “Diversion”

This session will explain what diversion is, the different forms of diversion (and their core tenants), and introduce our base model of diversion (the juvenile review board (JRB) approach).

Session 2 (May 18th, 8am PST): Punishment Is Really Just Pain (and Not What Youth Need)

This session will break down our current youth justice system and examine why it is not compatible with the current science of adolescent brain development and trauma exposure; especially given how both impact behavior. Learn how we can center this research, as well as our values, to pave a better path forward in youth justice work.

Session 3 (May 25th, 8am PST): Designing Diversion: Process and Procedure of a Restorative Diversion Program

How do we run a process of shared power and centered humanity?  We will discuss panel make-up, the dialogue process, and what supports are needed for youth, staff, and volunteers to make sure it all happens well (even if it’s happening through Zoom).

Session 4 (June 1st, 8am PST): From Random to Ripple: Creating Meaningful Moments of Accountability

What does moving away from punishment actually look like? This session will examine the opportunity in diversion to focus on the ripple effect of harm caused and find meaningful ways to create accountability (and avoid the consequences for consequences sake mentality). It will specifically cover inclusion and support of victims in the JRB process.
